I recently bought a new laptop. it’s an hp dv61100 artist edition 2, 6 gigs ram, 64 bit os, 500 gb space, AMD Turion(tm) x2 ultra dual-core mobile zm-86 2.40 GHz, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 Series. when i opened it everything was there, the problem was that it didn’t have how long I keep the battery charged the first time i plug it in. i checked the manual, the poster, internet, nothing. so i just pluged it in until it reached 100 percent and the battery only lasted less than an hour. so i finally called yesterday and they told me to leave it charged for 5-6 hours while the laptop is off. well that didn’t do anything, so i left it charging for 8 hours with the laptop on (not using it). that helped because now it lasts a little over 2 hours (mind you i’m in power saver mode so the screen isn’t all that bright). Did I mess up already by charging it for about an hour first and then using it? Can I fix this so I can charge it to it’s full potential? If so how long do I leave it charging for and does it have to be on and can i be using it while i do this? If I remember correctly this is suppose to last me atleast 4-6 hours without the charger.

I searched around on the Internet for some info about what I need to know, and so far, no such luck, so here goes:
I have a dead Laptop Li-ION battery pack in my possession, and i decided to tear it apart to find out how it works. Much to my suprise, 2 of the 9 cells in the battery pack had some charge left in them, so I destroyed the casing, and circuitry to get the cells out. I did some preliminary research online and found out that lithium is (obviously) very dangerous, even in battery form. Improper charging can cause damage to the cell (best case) to even a thermal runaway reaction leading to an explosion (worst case). Aside from that, lithium is very toxic, so needless to say, very dangerous stuff to play around with.
Which leads me to my question: How should I go about charging these cells to get some use out of them? Or is it just too risky to try? If I should just get rid of them, how should I go about this?
Obviously, I can’t dump these in the land fill, or can I?
I’m looking for a laptop and would like to know how much time a 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery gives you and how much time a 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery would give you? Also people say that you NEED to get a laptop with 60GB for the hard drive at the least. But is it that much different if I got a 40GB hard drive? Would it run really slow? I know it depends what you’re going to do, I’m just going to load and save digital photos on from my camera and do internet stuff and maybe a little word processing. But I also want to make sure I’m going to have a good internet connection (really good) <– any suggestions for internet? do i get the LAN pro wireless? do i need bluetooth? I’m really confused on all of that stuff
I know a lithium last for about 3 hours before recharging. How long does a 6 cell last before needing to be recharged ?
how long does the battery last before it has to be charged again and does it vary from one laptop to the next?
if so how’s the battery life if u get the standard battery on an hp pavilion (im looking into the dv5z series)
also if anybody can give me any pointers on how to maximize battery life and prevent losing battery life as the battery gets older, it would be appreciated
