Thanks for stopping by Computer Laptop Batteries.  You must have questions having to do with your laptop battery, but you can stop right here!  We’d love to help you with all of your battery related needs and supplies.  We’ve collected in one place all of the knowledge you can use to answer the questions running through your mind right about now:

  1. Are you sure I can’t fix my old battery?
  2. What are the different types of batteries out there?
  3. Do I need a part number from the battery, or can I just use the laptop model number?
  4. Where can I recycle my dead battery?
  5. Am I going to have to purchase a new battery every year or so?

First, let’s start with the most important question…There’s no way to fix my old battery?  This is probably the easiest answer to find out.  Charge the cell to 100%, then operate on battery power and see how soon it is before your computer turns off.  Be sure that you are running with all programs off and your power settings optimized before doing so because if you’re running too many different programs and accessories while on battery power, it will only deplete the charge that much faster.  If your battery doesn’t last more than 45 minutes to an hour and a half, it’s probably time to get a new one.

Picking a Battery

There are two kinds of batteries on the market for laptops, Ni-Cad and Lithium Ion.  Nickel Cadmium batteries are the original technology and as such are not perfect, as they inevitably suffer from a problem called power memory.  So, every time you don’t run the battery down before recharging, you will decrease the batteries future ability to hold the amount of power it was able to previously.  Eventually this issue brings you to where you are now, which is here, sitting with a battery that doesn’t work.

The other kind of battery, the Lithium Ion, does not have this problem, and so will last a bit longer during their life.  They are, however, more expensive.  What you have to do is determine how often you run your laptop on battery power to decide which product is perfect for you.

Purchasing a New Battery

Once you’ve gauged your need for a new battery, follow these easy steps to buy a new one.  First, turn on your laptop and go to the Control Panel.  Click Power Options, select the Power Meter tab and click on the battery icon.  The model number given there will let you know what type of battery to obtain.

Who will take my old battery?

As with all batteries, you cannot toss them in the trash with the rest of the garbage, as it’s terrible for the environment.  What you’ll have to do is seal it up and drop it off at your local BestBuy or other location that takes old batteries.   To find one, click here.

I heard a lot of different methods for protecting & preserving the life of a lithium ion battery (Laptop & iPhone) Should I empty them completely & then charge them to 100% or keep them fully charged whenever I can? As for the laptop, do I work with it while plugged or do I empty the battery & recharge it?

I know lithium-ion batteries run for a certain amount of charge-discharge cycles, but I don’t know if any cycles occur while the battery is fully charged and plugged in.
